Thompson Statement on Secret Service Appointment
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement on the news that Department of Homeland Security has announced the appointment of a Deputy Director for the U.S. Secret Service:
While I have high expectations for Mr. Magaw in his new role and am pleased that the critical position of Deputy Director of the Secret Service has been filled, I am concerned that the agency has failed to take the recurring advice regarding the need to bring in leadership from outside the agency. Cultures do not change easily and it is all the more difficult to begin reforms when there are no new voices to bring fresh ideas to the table. I hope that Secretary Johnson and Director Clancy rely on the Secret Service Protective Missions Panel's recommendation to have leadership from outside the agency as the search for the Chief Operating Officer commences.
